2018 was a very exciting, positive year for the nutraceutical industry. Consumers demonstrated a growing awareness for their food and beverage choices, opting for organic over conventional, sustainably-sourced, nutrient-dense functional foods and beverages packaged in easy convenient formats.
Over the past 2 years, Statista data shows a continuing sales growth trend in botanical dietary supplements which is expected to reach 8.3 billion USD by the end of 2019.1
The following three trends are predicted for 2019 and beyond.
Sustainability
In 2017, supply chain verification and traceability started to be an important part of company goals and objectives. In September 2017, after 5 years of researching and developing our own supply chain validation program, NP Nutra® launched Triple-T Verification®.
Throughout 2018, sustainability continued to be a strong talking point in many B2B meetings and according to industry insight predictions, it will remain one of the top considerations for 2019 and many years to come.A new recently published 2019 Mintel report states that US consumers have an open view on sustainability and many are willing to adopt more eco-conscious behaviors.2
Nutrient-rich Convenience
In today’s busy world, consumers are looking for fast, healthy and flavorful meals and beverages, giving product developers the task of creating an innovative product in an acceptable delivery format. The launch of stores like Amazon Go are changing the way we think about convenience stores, with freshly made grab-and-go snacks and meals, prepared foods and all-in-one meal kits that deliver a positive, stress-free meal experience.
Healthy aging
In 2016, one in every seven Americans, or 49.2 million, had reached age 65. By 2060, that number is set to double with 98 million Americans 65 years or older.3 As the population ages, so the need increases for consumer products to enhance self-care, maintain a good quality of life and promote health and wellness. This need, in turn, creates a demand for product manufacturers to develop longevity-enhancing products to help consumers look and feel younger. These products have certain requirements: they should be flavorful, high in nutrients (particularly plant-based protein, omega 3’s, vitamins, and minerals) and easily digested (fermented, sprouted, pre/probiotic).
Today, the majority of seniors and actually all adults, are looking for healthy aging supplements, functional foods and beverages to help support their health and wellness.
