The impact of nutrition on brain health, learning and memory has garnered the attention of product manufacturers and research developers the world over. Nutraceutical ingredients associated with improving cognitive function have major market potential for the natural health and wellness, cosmeceutical, food and beverage industries.

Aging is a worldwide phenomenon. In the US alone, persons 65 years and older numbered 44.7 million in 2013. That’s one in every seven Americans. The World Health Organization estimated that 35.6 million people were suffering from dementia in 2012, and is set to double by 2030. Currently there is no cure for dementia. Investment in research and development of products to prevent and/or stop the onset of dementia and to find an alternative support for mental health problems continue to gain ground.

Studies show that with age, the brain suffers from oxidative stress and the activity and renewal of brain cells tends to slow down. This is what is known as mitochondrial dysfunction. Ingredients containing omega fatty acids (especially omega-3 DHA), B vitamins (especially B12) and vitamin D, antioxidants, minerals such as magnesium, and many others are shown to enhance mitochondrial function. Their health benefits open up to possibilities of brain health management.

Some of the most prominent ingredients known to help support cognitive function and maintain brain health come from natural sources such as fruits, vegetables and herbs. Ayurvedic herbal brain supplement, Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi), has been in use for thousands of years to help enhance memory, learning and concentration. Another native of India, Ashwagandha, is a potent herb with antioxidant glutathione that supports the brain against aging and damage. A native to Asia and used as a medicinal herb in Chinese, African and Ayurvedic medicine, Gotu kola is known as “the fountain of life”. Legend has it that an ancient herbalist lived for more than 200 years as a result of taking Gotu kola. This herb contains triterpenoids known to improve mental clarity and mental fatigue.

Other brain boosting ingredients include Ginkgo biloba, a prehistoric plant native to China, which is extensively recommended in Europe to aid in memory and concentration problems. Blueberries are called “brainberries” by some. Acai berries are high in protein, contain Omega Fatty Acids and are linked to improving memory and artery function. Cocoa products are another excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They contain endorphins known to improve mood.

Turmeric is a yellowish spice commonly used in food preparations such as curries and eaten daily in India. Studies have shown that the risk of developing Alzheimer’s in India is 25% lower than in the US and may be linked to the regular consumption of Turmeric and its active ingredient Curcumin.

Green tea contains the amino acid L-theanine which has been found to promote relaxation, helping to focus and improve concentration. Other brain foods worth a mention include pumpkin seeds and blackcurrant.
