The tradition of Ayurveda from India has given the world many interesting and outstanding herbs. NP Nutra’s Nutra Ayurveda line uses many of these health-promoting botanicals. Even the plant names -- such as “she who possesses 100 husbands”, “Arjuna’s brave heart”, “gorgeous goddess” -- demonstrate that this herbal system celebrates the fullness of life. Not surprising, since the word Ayurveda itself means “the science of life.”

One of the system’s luminaries is Ashwagandha. Native to India, it is known as one of man’s best friends. It is said that you can tell a lot about an herb by noticing if it “likes” humans—that is, it will spring up spontaneously where man lives--near his houses. Walking through villages today you will see this friend of man springing from the earth so close to the walls it seems their roots must be joined to the house. Vedic texts describe how when a person wants to “live like a yogi” he’ll go to the forest and live on fruits and roots. One of the main roots used for the yogi’s food is Ashwagandha.

It is such a potent herb that it was named after the stallion (ashwa), and for being grounded in the earth’s essence, or elements (gandha). Thus, it means “having the grounded strength of a stallion.” The herb is believed to be an all-around strength-builder and tonic. Paradoxically, it was given the alternate name danya somnifera— “bringing fruitful sleep.” Ayurveda clarifies this paradox with the explanation that when one is grounded in strength, he becomes peaceful; strength induces calmness. That is, if one’s nervous system is weak it is unstable, which causes the person’s emotions and sleep to be similarly unstable. But if the nervous system is strong, the person becomes calm, and thus his sleep is also stable and restful.

It is one of the adaptagens, whose specialty is to constantly promote balance and rejuvenation of the body. This adaptagen enters the physical system to analyze what has to be done to tone down the hyper-active and tone up the low-energy, then helps clear the body of toxins. It is used to help balance hormones and also as an anti-inflammatory aid. It helps sooth over-stimulus of the nerves, eases nerve pain and headaches, and as an added benefit, assists in weight-loss. It is used to promote heart health, strengthening the immune system and improving digestion; nourishes the nervous system and improves brain cell function. When taken before sleep at night it helps promote a restful sleep. People who have high-stress lifestyles use it to help neutralize stress, while those who have a high level of physical activity or who work out a lot, take it regularly due to its ability to help improve muscle tone and reduce inflammation. Ashwagandha helps strengthen the men’s reproductive system and increases sperm count. In women it assists in regulating menstrual (hormonal) imbalances, toning uterine muscles and aiding in women’s overall reproductive system issues including bone density health for post-menopausal women. Ashwagandha helps with muscle loss, degeneration, neuropathy, fatigue and promotes respiratory health. Although it is called a natural steroid or stimulant, it is not actually a stimulant and there are no known side-effects.
