Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a fruit from the nightshade family that is botanically classified as a berry. It is consumed as a culinary vegetable because it has a more savory flavor and lower sugar content than fruits.
Tomatoes are the main dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which gives red tomatoes their color. While lycopene is the main carotenoid in tomatoes, they also contain alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, neoxanthin, lutein and α-cryptoxanthin. Other plant compounds include naringenin and chlorogenic acid. Tomatoes are also a good source of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, K1, B9 (folate) and potassium.*
