Leading the world in Nutraceuticals

The licorice plant (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is an herbaceous weed that grows about four feet tall, has purple flowers and is native to hot, dry areas in Southern Europe and Asia. Its botanical name means “sweet root” in Greek and its roots are straight, round and grow horizontally under the ground. Licorice root is a very popular spice, used worldwide in beverages, candies, chewing gum and toothpaste.

The unique flavor and sweetness of licorice is due to its main bioactive constituent, the saponin glycyrrhizin, but it also contains other saponins, flavonoids, polyphenols, phytoestrogens and carbenoxolone. Licorice root has a high content of sugars and starch, and contains dietary fiber, amino acids, several B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium.*
