Mango - Tropical, Golden Fruit

Mangoes (Mangifera indica) are sweet, juicy tropical fruits consumed and loved the world over. Native to South Asia, Mango trees have been grown for their fruits for thousands of years. Of the hundreds of mango varieties, most bear fruits with the characteristic orange-yellow or reddish peel and a juicy golden orange-yellow pulp. Mango's appealing flavor, texture and color has made it a popular ingredient in Asian cuisine, where it is used in main and side dishes, appetizers, drinks and desserts.

Mango

General Information

Mango trees can grow up to 130 feet high with branches extending to 60 feet wide. They generally have long life spans, and some can live up to three hundred years while still bearing fruits. The tree bears delicate, white, fragrant flowers which turn into ripe fruits in four to five months. Of the more than 500 mango varieties, most bear fruits that ripen in summer.

Mango fruits are drupes, which are simple fruits with a thin outer skin, a fleshy middle layer (pulp), and a hard, stony pit in the middle. Mangoes vary in size, shape, color and sweetness. They are round, oval or kidney-shaped, and can grow from two to ten inches long, depending on the variety. The sweet, juicy pulp is usually yellow-orange, and the skin color can vary, with shades of green, yellow, orange, red, pink and purple.
