Lucuma - Gold of the Incas

Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit regarded as a symbol of fertility and creation by ancient civilizations of South America. Referred to as "Gold of the Incas" it was used quite extensively in the Incan Empire. In traditional South American medicine, Lucuma was recognized for its antibiotic and anti-fungal properties. Resembling an avocado in shape and color of its outer covering, Lucuma has a golden yellow pulp with a distinct taste described as a combination of maple syrup, caramel and sweet potato. Recent research reveals that in addition to the fruit's unique flavor, it also boasts many health-promoting benefits.

General Information

The Lucuma (Pouteria lucuma)  tree is an evergreen that can grow up to 20 meters high. It is native to the Andean valleys and grows in the subtropical regions of Peru, Chile and Ecuador. The Lucuma fruit is often ovate or elliptic and measures 7.5 to 10 cm long, covered with a thin, delicate brownish-green skin. Its pulp is bright yellow, dry and mealy in texture and naturally sweet. Although the Lucuma fruit can be eaten raw, it is most commonly used as an ingredient in shakes, ice cream, pies, puddings and other traditional South American desserts. Lucuma pulp is also dehydrated to produce a partly-soluble powder or flour.
