General Information
Also known as wolfberry, matrimony vine and Chinese desert thorn, the Goji (Lycium barbarum) plant grows 3-12 feet tall. Goji is mostly known for its berries or fruits, but all parts are edible, including the leaves, flowers, berries and root bark.
Fully-ripened Goji berries are a beautiful deep orange red, measure around 1/8 inch in diameter and 1/2 inch long, are ovoid with a waxy skin. Traditionally, ripe berries are carefully harvested by hand or shaken from the shrub into trays, and then eaten fresh, sun-dried or juiced.
Nutrients and Benefits
Goji berries are a rich source of polysaccharides and one of the richest food sources of carotenoids (a better source than even carrots), including beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. They also contain beta-sitosterol and nineteen amino acids including all nine essential amino acids.
In addition, they are rich in potassium, contain complex B-vitamins, have higher levels of vitamin C than oranges and contain 21 trace minerals, including germanium, a trace mineral rarely found in foods.
