Aronia berries (Photinia melanocarpa), also known as black chokeberries, are small fruits native to North America that were historically used by Native American tribes. With a sharp, astringent taste that dries the mouth, they earned the nickname “chokeberries” and are mainly used to make juices, purées, jams, jellies, ice creams, syrups, teas and wines.
Aronia berries are rich in polyphenolic compounds such as anthocyanins, phenolic acids and flavanols.
