Acerola (Malpighia glabra L., Malpighia emarginata), also known as Barbados cherry, West Indian cherry and Puerto Rican cherry, is native to tropical and subtropical America and the West Indies. Acerola cherries grow on small trees or bushy shrubs and are bright red or yellow-orange cherry-sized fruits containing small seeds. The fruit pulp has a fruity, citrus flavor.
Known as a rich source of vitamin C, acerola also contains bioflavonoids like kaempferol, quercetin and rutin, which are required for the absorption of vitamin C in the body. It is a very good source of anthocyanins and the carotenoids lutein and beta-carotene.*
