Tart cherry (Prunus cerasus), also known as sour cherry or dwarf cherry, is closely related to the sweet cherry, but is acidic and sour in comparison. This small tree, with its crimson to dark red fruit, is native to Europe and southern Asia.
Abundant in tart cherries are anthocyanins, potent plant phenols which gives fruits and vegetables their red color. Tart cherries also contain a good amount of tryptophan, which is a precursor of serotonin. They are also a good source of carotenoids (provitamin A), vitamin C, manganese, potassium and copper, and contain smaller amounts of vitamin K, B vitamins, calcium, iron and magnesium.*
