Phyllanthus niruri, a potent Ayurvedic herb also known as chanca piedra and ‘stone breaker’, is a weed commonly found in tropical coastal areas. It is a slender, erect, branching herb that grows 20-28 inches tall, with smooth bark, pale green flowers, tiny smooth fruits containing seeds, and small, alternating elliptic-oblong leaves.
Many bioactive plant compounds are found in phyllanthus niruri; lignans like phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin, alkaloids like phyllanthoside, as well as saponin, tannins, gernanin, corilagin and rutin. It is also a good source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamin C, and contains moderate amounts of iron.*
